The Buddy McClain Hall of Fame : Brenda Gonzales
The Buddy McClain Hall of Fame award is the most prestigious award that can be given to a MVP Sonic employee. Since it’s creation in 2000, this award is presented to an individual who has shown significant growth, dedication, leadership, and an overall commitment to excellence to the MVP Sonic Group. This year’s Buddy McClain Hall of Fame winner is Brenda Gonzales!
Here is Brenda’s Story:
Over 38 years ago, my husband David, convinced me to come and work with him at Sonic. We managed a store in Arkansas for many years and eventually bought a franchise and built two Sonic’s in Missouri. After more than 20 years we sold those and started looking for a new Sonic home. We attended the Sonic convention in 2007 and I ran into a very personable young man by the name of Michael Jordan. Michael and I seemed to always end up being on the same bus, headed to a meeting or event. We struck a conversation about McClain Sonics and how much he loved his job and the people he worked with. David had served on the Franchise Advisory Council with Buddy, so we decided to talk to him about the possibility of joining MVP. We met Andy a couple of weeks later.
We decided to move to the Alabama Gulf Coast in December of 2007. The Gonzales’ were a package deal. I became the general manager of the Sonic on Montlimar Drive in Mobile. Brandy, our oldest daughter, was the general manager of the Bay Minette Sonic. Mallory, our youngest daughter, worked as an assistant manager at the Fairhope Sonic and was on the Opening A-Team for new stores. And David, went from store to store, helping anywhere needed. Buddy had made a promise to me that If I would make Montlimar profitable, he would build me a new store. He made good on that promise. The Sonic of Spanish Fort opened in November of 2014.
I really never planned to be a Sonic manager, I always wanted to be a teacher. And through Sonic and MVP, I am afforded that opportunity every single day. I teach ServSafe, AMLC and SMS and my beautiful Sonic is a Certified Training Store. And yes, I still work side by side everyday with that loving husband of mine. MVP was a very good move for us!
